Itinerary of Ecoaventuras Tambopata

Day 1 - Trail, Night, And Canopy Walks In The Amazon

We’ll pick you up at the Puerto Maldonado airport or bus station upon your arrival and then travel by motorboat along the Madre de Dios River towards our lodge Ecoaventuras Amazónicas. During the trip, amongst the trees and colorful plants such as venus flytraps, we’ll see locals going about their daily routines, riverside cultivations of rice and plantain, and many different bird species such as showy crowned herons, Jabiru storks, and kingfishers.

Our lodge, Ecoaventuras Amazónicas, offers bungalow lodging based on double and triple rooms. The aim is to provide comfortable accomodations in harmony with the surrounding environment. Upon our arrival, there’ll be a brief introductory talk about our work with the Cachuela community in a unique ecotourism project, as well as the general overview of the lodge and its trails.

We’ll begin our activity with an ethno-botanical walk along the lodge’s trails, past giant trees of incalculable age. The walk will allow you to learn about the plants of the Amazon and their traditional uses. We’ll make our way to an 80 ft observation tower overlooking the forest canopy.

The hanging bridge, bordered with handrails and anchored by small platforms, will offer us spectacular views of the sub-canopy, offering us the opportunity to observe colorful treetop birds like toucans, parrots, parakeets and macaws.

The jungle becomes even more mysterious as the sun falls, as we’ll experience for ourselves during a night walk that will introduce us to the nocturnal Amazon, whose sights and sounds include the noisy insects and owls and the musmuqui, the world’s only nocturnal monkey.

We’ll spend the night in bungalow lodging.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Day 2 - Lake Sandoval

After a very early breakfast, we’ll depart by motorboat upriver (in the direction of Puerto Maldonado) to Tambopata Reserve. After a walk of about an hour, we’ll arrive at Lake Sandoval, where we’ll see cacophonous giant otters and peculiar hoatzin birds, which are locally known as Shansho or Anhginga, meaning duck snake. We’ll also be able to spot howler, capuchin, spider, tamarin and other monkeys. We’ll explore our surroundings by rowboat, including a stunning waterfall. We’ll arrive at the time of peak animal activity, but this wanes nearing midday. Thus, we’ll rest on the shore at this time, while enjoying a delicious tropical boxed lunch.

After lunch, we can refresh ourselves in the lake before beginning our return trip to the lodge.

We’ll have dinner at the lodge and spend the night in bungalows.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3 - Parrot Clay Lick - Puerto Maldonado

We’ll wake up very early on this day, at 4:15am, to visit the Parrot Clay Lick along the riverside. At this early hour, when the rainforest begins to wake, the trip itself is quite magical. These are walls along which hundreds of parrots and macaws (up to 7 different species) gather to feed upon the clay, which contains minerals that allow the birds to detoxify from any unripe fruit or seeds that they’ve eaten. They also socialize and find mates at these sites. One can only witness this colorful spectacle in the first hours of the morning. The trip will last approximately 2 hours.

Afterwards, we will return to the inn to have a delicious breakfast before departing on the return trip to Puerto Maldonado, where you’ll be dropped off at the airport, bus terminal, or your Puerto Maldonado hotel or hostel.
