Itinerary of Cusco Complete
Day 1 - CITY TOUR
We will pick you up from the bus terminal or the airport on your arrival in Cusco and take you to the hostel so you can rest and acclimate yourself. At 1:30 pm we will begin the tour of the historical monuments in Cusco and its surroundings. We’ll do this tour in our tourist transport.
In the Plaza de Armas, we will see the Cathedral of Cusco, built on the palace of the Inca Wiracocha, also we will be able to appreciate the paintings that it keeps inside, from the Cusco school. We will visit the temple of the Qoricancha (Golden Temple), or also known as the Temple of the Sun , this was the most important religious center during the time of the Incas, it was a sacred place where the offerings for Inti (The maximum Inca divinity) We will visit the archaeological park of Sacsayhuaman which is a fortress of enormous stones, Qenqo (labyrinth zigzag), which was an astronomical calendar and temple dedicated to the land, Tambomachay (resting place), also known as the Baños del Inca , with its artificial waterfalls, canals and aqueducts constructed with great rocks, and finally we will visit Puca Pucara, suspected that it was used like a military fort to assure the entrance to Tambomachay. Back to Cusco we will drop you off at the hostel around 6pm
Day 2 - SACRED VALLEY OF THE INCAS
This day we will start picking you up from the hostel at 8:40 am. To head for the Sacred Valley. Our first stop will be after one hour drive, in the picturesque village of Pisaq. Depending on the day of the week, we can visit the colorful local market (Sunday and Thursday). We will have a couple of hours to explore the archeological site of Pisaq with our guide, we will observe the agricultural terraces of Pisaq, the Intihuatana Temple of the Sun, And the Q'allaqasa fortress.
Then we will continue our trip through the Sacred Valley, passing through several of the small traditional villages of the Vilcanota river valley, we will make a stop in Urubamba for a buffet lunch.
Our next stop will be Ollantaytambo, where we will have a couple of hours to admire the Inca foundations of the city, whose survival makes this place one of the best examples of Inca urban planning, we will also visit the impressive ruins of the Fortress Inca of Ollantaytambo. The only Inca bastion that successfully withstood the Spanish attack, and which in the Inca times protected the entrance to the Urubamba River Valley. Our last visit will be to the town of Chinchero, where we will arrive approximately at 4:00 pm. From this height along the plains of Anta, we can have excellent views of the Sacred Valley. In the Plaza Mayor we are going to examine a great Inca wall, which has trapezoidal niches, which is believed to have been the work of the Inca Tupac Yupanqui. The square also has an elaborate decoration of the 17th century, built during the colonial period on top of the remains of an Inca temple of the palace.
Then we will start the trip back to Cusco, where we will drop you off at the hostel at approximately 6:00 in the afternoon.
If you prefer to spend the night in Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes), please ask us about the possibility of taking a train from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu Pueblo on this day.
Day 3 - MACHU PICCHU- THE LOST CITY OF THE INCAS
This day we will leave very early for the train station in Poroy or Ollantaytambo (the specific time depends on the availability of train schedules for that day). We will board the train, which will depart to Machu Picchu Pueblo (known as Aguas Calientes).
Once we reach the picturesque village of Aguas Calientes, we will board a bus that will take us to the mysterious ruins of Machu Picchu. There will be a guided tour of two hours during which the guide will explain the history and meaning of some of the most impressive components of Machupicchu, we will finish this guided tour in the Intihuatana temple, then we will have free time to explore the place on our own and take some photos. On the way back we will take the bus to Aguas Calientes for lunch and then take the train back to Cusco, where we will drop you off in the hotel.
Day 4 - MARAS MORAY
Around 8:30 am we will pick you up in our private transport and we will go to the small town of Moray, along the way we will pass through land of crops, such as maize and goose that are the subsistence of local families. We will spend about an hour in the archeological complex learning about this fascinating site, which was an Inca agricultural laboratory that has circular concentric platforms that imitate several microclimates. We will enjoy lunch at Moray before continuing to the Maras salt mines. As we approach, we will discover that what appears to be white snow along the slope is actually a large group of thousands of shallow salt ponds spread out on stepped terraces. The water source of these ponds is a small saltwater stream brought through underground channels. Members of the community of Maras use these ponds in the extraction of salt for the local and international market. The landscape of this place changes when the sunlight illuminates along the different levels of salt and the water in these ponds creates a show of texture and color that can only be appreciated in this area.
We will stay in Maras for an hour, then we will return to Cusco by bus, and we will be arriving at approximately 14:00. We will have the rest of the day free to enjoy the city.
Day 5 - RETURN TO LIMA
Depending on the flight schedule of each traveler, they will be transferred to the airport to board the flight back to Lima or to the next stop on their trip.
